Why do you need crowns or veneers?

There are many reasons why you may need or want a crown or veneer.

Typically, a crown is used to cover a tooth above the gumline, in order to provide a good seal after root canal treatment, or sometimes when the tooth has had a large filling.

Crowns can also be used to improve the appearance or alter the shape of teeth.

Porcelain veneers are a thin layer of porcelain which is made bespoke by a lab technician to fit your tooth exactly, and it is usually glued to just the front of the tooth.

Veneers like this can be used to mask a dark tooth, or to bulk some small or displaced teeth out to make them appear like they are in line again.

How do crowns and veneers work?

Every situation will be individual and there are so many different reasons that you might consider, or be advised to have, a crown or veneer.

You will always need to have a detailed examination, and usually x-rays of the teeth, with one of our fab team members before deciding whether crowns or veneers are right for you.
The teeth will normally need to be adjusted to the right shape for the cover that is going to go over it.
Once the tooth has been shaped then we either take a traditional impression of that or we can use our fancy 3D scanner to create a 3D model to send to the laboratory.
Within a couple of weeks, the lab will have made the crown or veneer and we will see you to fit it.

Types of crowns

Porcelain Bonded Crown – these look tooth-coloured as they have hand-painted porcelain over the top of a thin metal core for strength.
Gold Crown – made from a gold alloy, these are ideal for situations where there is limited room to place a crown in your bite, or perhaps if you grind/clench your teeth, as the gold is very forgiving. Or some people just like a bit of bling!
Emax/zirconia crown – these modern crowns are all-ceramic and have a strong, milled ceramic centre, with beautifully layered porcelain over the top to create a natural look, to blend in better next to your own teeth.

Types of veneers

Porcelain – made from beautiful porcelain and hand finished for a life-like finish.
Emax – these modern veneers are created from high-strength porcelain and bespoke for the individual. They are made from thin layers and are bonded to the front surface of your tooth.
